Functional Design Specifications (FDS)

The FDS describe in detail the control concept of a process plant. They list the conditions that must be fulfilled to start up the plant and the conditions when it needs to be shut down. The behaviour of every single component in any possible operating state of the plant under any possible process condition must be defined by the FDS. They must be logically consistent such that no contradictory behaviour of components is possible. The FDS will eventually be programmed onto the PLC (programmable logic controller).
